    Shiva, the Hindu divinity, is portrayed as Nataraja, the heavenly cosmic dancer. The two most well-known dances of Shiva are Ananda Tandava, which is a powerful dance connected with destruction, and Lasya, which is a delicate dance associated with the creation of the world.

    The sculpture depicts the lord with 4 hands holding various objects in his hands, including a drum (damaru) that represents the rhythmic sound of creation, and a flame of fire (agni) that symbolizes destruction and transformation. There is a snake wrapped in his anterior right arm that represents 'Abhaya' (without any fear). His anterior left hand takes the shape of Gajahasta (Elephant hand), showering his blessings upon his devotees, and extends towards his left leg. The right foot trampled upon the demon dwarf, Apasmara. The cosmos is represented by the arch of flames or prahabhamandala. This particular arch has three separate layers which represent fire, (outside) earth, (middle) and water (inside).
